Very nice alapana of a very difficult raga. It has a distinct North Indian ring to it, however. I have heard two dozen vocalists singing this raga, and in each case the feeling that the raga has a North Indian sounding effect persists. So, it is an intrinsic characteristic of this raga, I suppose. When sung properly, they say the raga creates a sense of awe and wonderment (adbhuta rasa). Sangeethakalaanidhis Sri Semmangudi Sreenivasa Iyer and Sri. Maharajapuram Santanam used to sing this raga, followed by Sri Deekshitar's composition Ardhanareeshwaram aaraadhayami sathatham. For those who are curious to know the swaras of this wonderful raga: S R1 G3 M2 D1 S // S N3 D1 M2 G3 R1 S. There is no Panchamam in this raga. In YouTube there is a video of Mrs Gayatri (of the famous Ranjani-Gayatri duo) singing Kumudakriya alapana that is extraordinarily beautiful: v=p5ivBLFxgjk Yesh Prabhu, Bushkill, Pennsylvania
